Den Ingalls fällt es sehr schwer, in Winoka zu bleiben, doch Charles bringt es auch nicht über sich, nach Walnut Grove zurückzuziehen und Mary alleine an der Blindenschule zurückzulassen. Als auch noch Laura mit Mr. Standish aneinandergerät, verschärft das die Situation zusätzlich. Schließlich erklärt Mary ihren Eltern, dass sie inzwischen erwachsen ist und alleine ihren Weg gehen muss.

In der fünften Staffel ziehen die Ingalls nach Winoka, um Mary näher zu sein, die dort an der Blindenschule unterrichtet. Doch das Leben in der Stadt fällt ihnen nicht leicht.
